ghost bike

I'd never heard of ghost bikes until this past summer when one was erected just outside Saline, in Ann Arbor.

Ghost bike in Ann Arbor

A ghost bike is a memorial to someone who died while riding their bike.

This ghost bike memorializes Tim Pincikowski who was struck by a minivan while riding down Maple Road.

I think it's a haunting and fitting tribute.

Those kind of memorials are all over here in Hawai'i with or without the bike

I had never seen this type of memorial. Thank you for sharing it. I'm a mt. biker, but my husband is a roadbiker, so I think (worry) about accidents quite a bit.

By the way, I really enjoy your blog. I can't remember how I found you, but glad I did.

best,
Kelli

We get all sorts of those kinds of memorials here in FL too. Sometimes with bikes, sometimes with crosses hanging in trees. Very eerie when you pass by.

I've never seen a ghost bike memorial but now I'll be on the lookout.

Knowing the nuts we have in CA, they'd steal the bike!

Never seen the ghost bike one.
Just the little flower memorials you see on the side of highways and such where there was a horrible accident.

first i've seen a ghost bike. if i knew a loved one was killed at a certain location, i'd probably have a hard time passing by. not sure if this kinda thing would help or make it harder.

Hmmm I've never seen this kind of memorial either!

I've seen them a few times. It's very sad but I can understand why people do this. Remembering our dead loved ones like this can allow us to have place to visit to connect to them much like a grave site.

Very different way to remember some one...

Wow. I haven't seen anything like this. It's kind of interesting. I don't know if they could do it here in the LA area, though, because there would be too many ghost bikes on the side of the road.

I, too, have never heard of this. Nor have I seen one. We have plenty of road sign shrines in New Mexico along our highways. Quite ornate too! But never a ghost bike that I can remember. I like it

These were featured on CSI: NY, I think it was. I guess they're all over the city.

I agree very moving.

Wow, that really has impact.

I, too, have seen other memorials but not a ghost bike. Hopefully it will remind drivers to slow down.

That's almost uncomfortable to see. I hope it makes a difference.

I saw one in Royal Oak this year too. I think the ghost bikes are meant more as a reminder to those of us driving motorized vehicles to watch out for bicyclists and pedestrians. As for leaving a roadside memorial, I'd rather remember them somewhere peaceful in their happier times rather than tragically at the site where their life was lost.

I've never seen the ghost bike memorials but have seen ones with flowers and crosses and it always gives me the chills to think someone died on that very spot.

This is new to me too, but a great idea! Many driver have no clue ow to share the road with bikers.

I've never heard of that type of memorial either. So sad, but a fitting reminder for people to drive more carefully. A local man, much beloved and a wonderful musician was killed while riding his bike in our area about a year ago. Tragic.

I've seen markers with flowers and signs on the road, but never a ghost bike.
